It is a branch of mathematics which was originally developed to calculate unknown sides and angles in triangles.  Trigonometry is very useful in applications such as surveying, navigation and electronics.<\/p>\n<h3>Example 1<\/h3>\n<p>Suppose you were a forester and you wanted to know the height of a tree without having to climb the tree with a measuring tape.  You can find the height by taking two measurements from the ground (Figure 3).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legacy.lwebs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/032211_1921_Introductio1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Figure 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legacy.lwebs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/032211_1921_Introductio2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Figure 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p>Once the distance from the base of the tree is known, as well as the angular measurement to the top of the tree, you can make a scale drawing of a similar triangle and measure the length of the corresponding side (Figure 4).<\/p>\n<p>Using the proportion:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 36pt\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legacy.lwebs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/032211_1921_Introductio3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 36pt\">\n<p>the tree is 35.8 m tall.<\/p>\n<p>By using trigonometry, you can solve problems like this in an even simpler fashion.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trigonometry means &#8220;triangle measure&#8221;.
