{"id":54,"date":"2010-06-07T11:53:44","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T18:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faculty.camosun.ca\/martinbuck\/?p=54"},"modified":"2010-06-07T11:53:44","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T18:53:44","slug":"learning-summit-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.lwebs.ca\/index.php\/learning-summit-2010\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Summit 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m in Phoenix at the League for Innovation&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.league.org\/ls2010\/\">Learning College Summit 2010 conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote presentation was by <a title=\"Who is Dr. Terry O'Banion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.league.org\/terry\/default.htm\">Terry O&#8217;Banion <\/a>and Cyntia Wilson on the connections between the Principles of a Learning College and the Student Success\/Completion Agenda.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"A Learning College for the 21st Century\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ErToAaukFa8C&amp;pg=PP1&amp;dq=O'Banion&amp;cd=1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">O&#8217;Banion<\/a> a\u00a0learning college<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creates substantive change in the individual learner.<\/li>\n<li>Engages learners as full partners in the learning process, assuming primary responsibility for their own choices.<\/li>\n<li>Treats and offers as many options for learning as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Assists learners to form and participate in collaborative learning activities.<\/li>\n<li>Defines the roles of learning facilitators by the needs of the learners.<\/li>\n<li>Succeeds only when it can document improved and expanded learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the last few years more money has been spent on community colleges\u00a0 than in the previous 100 plus years. Much of this money comes from foundations like <a title=\"Lumina Foundation for Education\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lumina_Foundation_for_Education\">Lumina<\/a> and <a title=\"Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gates_foundation\">Gates<\/a>. The focus of this money has been the Student Success\/Completion Agenda goals. Key issues for these are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on low-income, underprepared, and\/or underrepresented students<\/li>\n<li>Measures of success include\n<ul>\n<li>course completion<\/li>\n<li>retention<\/li>\n<li>certificate (one-year or more)<\/li>\n<li>degree<\/li>\n<li>job<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The presentation asked us to discuss\u00a0two &#8216;big questions&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do actions arising from\u00a0the Principles of the Learning College improve and expand studen learning (as identified by the Student Success\/Completion Agenda)?<\/li>\n<li>How do we know?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the context of this was distinctly American, there are parallels with Canadian and specifically Camosun College Community Learning Partnerships department\u00a0issues around the <a title=\"Nine Essential Skills\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hrsdc.gc.ca\/eng\/workplaceskills\/essential_skills\/general\/understanding_es.shtml\">Nine Essential Skills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some issues raised by O&#8217;Banion that resonated with us all are<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have created a culture of access that limits student success.&#8221; He mentioned allowing late registration as an example of this.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama has set a goal of increasing college graduation by 5 million by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Lumina Foundation&#8217;s goal is to increase enrollment by 60% by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates Foundation wants to double enrollment of younger (&lt;26), low income adults wbho will earn &#8216;labor market value&#8217; credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Thes goals are set in the context of a college completion rate that \u00a0has been flat for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>To meet these goals foundations are giving more money than they have in all the previous 110 years combined of the existence of community colleges.<\/p>\n<p>The commom elements of these initiatives are a focus on low income, under-prepared students.<\/p>\n<p>The measures of success are connected to one year certification or more and NOT\u00a0short-term course\u00a0credentials.
