Math 072 and 135 — What’s the difference?

Math 072 covers the same topics as Math 135. They are both equivalent to the first half of Math 11. See the info below taken (August 28, 2013) from the course descriptions at the college calendar at http://camosun.ca/learn/calendar/current/web/math.html. They are also listed as equivalent prerequisites at this Camosun math instructor’s faculty website at http://ballinger.disted.camosun.bc.ca/HighSchoolMathRequirements.pdf.

The difference is in how these topics are presented. Math 135 is presented in a four hour per week lecture format. Math 072 is present as either a self-paced and mastery based section on campus or a fixed-paced and mastery based section online. Mastery based means as soon as you master one topic, you may move on to the next. Thus it is feasible for a student to complete both 072 and 073 (the second half of Math 11) in one term.

MATH 072 Advanced Mathematics 1

(4 credits) Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer (3 lab hours per week plus 5 hours per week over 15 weeks)

This course is the first part of Math 11 and provides the algebra skills required for statistics, criminal justice and some business programs. Topics include: linear equations and inequalities, rearranging formulas, linear equations in two variables, systems of linear equations, integer and rational exponents, polynomials and factoring.

Prerequisite: “B” in Applications of Math 11; or Principles of Math 10, or Foundations of Math & Pre-calculus 10, or Foundations of Math 11, or Applications of Math 12, or MATH 053, or MATH 057; or “C-” in Principles of Math 11, or Pre-calculus 11; or assessment

MATH 135 Career Algebra

(3 credits) Fall, Winter (4 lecture hours per week)

This course may be used for entry into business programs, the criminal justice program, and elementary statistics. It is also a good choice for students who want to refresh their skills before tackling a higher level mathematics course. Topics include a brief review of fractions, decimals, percentages and signed numbers; solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable; graphing linear equations and inequalities in two variables; function notation; systems of linear equations; integer and rational exponents; and fundamental polynomial operations.

Before registering for this course, students are advised to complete the MATH 135 Readiness Check at http://camosun.ca/math/
