Math 073 and 137 — What’s the difference?

Math 072 and 073 combined cover the same topics as Math 137. Math 072 is equivalent to the first half of Math 11 and 073 equivalent to the second half of Math 11.  For details, see the info below taken (August 28, 2013) from the course descriptions at the college calendar at http://camosun.ca/learn/calendar/current/web/math.html. They are also listed as equivalent prerequisites at this Camosun math instructor’s faculty website,  http://ballinger.disted.camosun.bc.ca/HighSchoolMathRequirements.pdf.

The difference is in how these topics are presented. Math 137 is presented in an eight hour per week lecture format. Math 072/073 are presented as either a self-paced and mastery based section on campus or a fixed-paced and mastery based section online. Mastery based means as soon as you master one topic, you may move on to the next. Thus it is feasible for a student to complete 072 (the first half of Math 11) and 073 (the second half) in one term.

MATH 073 Advanced Mathematics 2

(4 credits) Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer (3 lab hours per week plus 5 hours per week over 15 weeks)

This course is the second half of Math 11 and is an excellent refresher for those who wish to upgrade before Math 12 or Precalculus. Topics include: rational and radical expressions and equations, quadratic equations and functions, right triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions of any angle and the Sine and Cosine Laws.

Prerequisite: “C+” in MATH 072, or MATH 135; or Principles of Math 11, or Pre-calculus 11, or Foundations of Math 12,or assessment

MATH 137 Algebra & Triangle Trigonometry

(5 credits) Fall, Winter, Spring (8 lecture hours per week)

This course provides a foundation for the further study of mathematics. Topics include linear equations and inequalities; function notation; linear functions; systems of linear equations in two variables; polynomial, rational and radical expressions and equations; quadratic functions and equations; and triangle trigonometry including the Sine and Cosine Laws.

Prerequisite: MATH 053 or MATH 135, or Principles of Math 10; or Foundations of Math & Pre-calculus 10, or “B” in Applications of Math 11; or Foundations of Math 11, or Applications of Math 12, or “C-” in either Principles of Math 11, or Pre-calculus 11;or assessment.
